Philliskirk's cup frustration

20 August 2012

Latics win but show good and the bad

Head of Youth Tony Philliskirk was far from happy, even though Latics' under-18's beat Blackpool 4-2 to claim a semi-final place in the Lancashire FA Youth Cup.

While Philliskirk was delighted with the quality of their first-half display in which they established a 3-0 lead, he was disappointed with their second-period showing.

He said: "It was a game of two halves. We were very good in the first half and very sloppy in the second.

"You could see it was out first competitive game of the season as we tired in the second half.

"The second half was disappointing was we lost our impetus and were on the back foot and it could have been interesting had they taken more of the chances they created."

Philliskirk was also unhappy with his side's finishing saying they ought to have been more clinical in front of goal.

He added credit ought to be given to Blackpool who were more direct in the second period and for the way in which they stopped Latics playing the way they did in the opening 45 minutes.

"They were far more direct and we couldn't cope with the physical side," explained Philliskirk.

The Head of Youth says he will be majoring on the positives from a promising first-half display and looking to build on them over the season.
