Cup puzzler for Derbyshire

2 December 2012

Latics take on Matt's parent club

On-loan Matt Derbyshire gave a wry smile as Latics were drawn against his parent club Nottingham Forest in the third round of the FA Cup with Budweiser.

"It was a strange one for Latics to be drawn against Forest," he mused.

Derbyshire(pictured) added he will be intrigued to see if he is involved in the game.

He is due back at the City Ground in mid-December but Latics could possibly make a move to extend the loan once the transfer window reopens in January.

Derbyshire won't, however, be able to play for Forest as he is cup-tied having played for Latics in the competition against Kidderminster Harriers and Doncaster Rovers.

He said: "If I return to Latics in January, I would love to play against Forest. Whether they would allow to play, however, is another matter.

"I will be either playing for Latics or watching the game from the stands."

Derbyshire says it is a good draw for Latics as they take on npower Championship opponents.

"Forest get decent attendances so Latics will earn a good pay day as well as testing themselves against one of the top Championship clubs," he said.

Derbyshire also played down the fact he was Latics' cup hero yesterday - it was his two goals which booked a place in the third round.

He said: "I may have got the attention for scoring twice, but the other lads deserve enormous credit for the way they played.

"It was a team effort and we played some great football in the second half.

"We need to play like that more often and, if we get that consistency, who knows what we might achieve?"
