M'voto goal threat

9 December 2012

Set-piece practice pays off

Centre-half Jean-Yves M'voto was not surprised to score a rare goal for Latics, their opener in the 2-0 npower League One win at Colchester United.

The 24-year-old (pictured) revealed that manager Paul Dickov has been encouraging the 6ft 4in stopper to become a goalscorer.

M'voto said: "Actually we worked on this the previous day in training. The manager told me he wanted me to score.

"It was a great corner from Lee Croft and it is good for the team that it worked."

M'voto, who has scored only five goals in 95 appearances for Latics, is hoping to get forward more.

He said: "Sometimes I talk to Lee how I want the ball delivering and he did it perfectly.

"It was a perfect day for me as not only I scored but the defence kept a clean sheet."

M'voto added it was a collective team effort which won the team three points at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

He said: "Everybody worked very hard - the forwards, midfield and defence - and it is a win we deserved.

"We need get focused about our next game against Swindon and not about having a good run.

"Colchester is not an easy place to win at so we are very pleased."
