Latics notch fourth away league win

Latics notched their fourth away win of the campaign in npower League One following a convincing 2-0 victory at Colchester United.

Goals from Jean-Yves M'voto and Matt Derbyshire earned Latics their fourth win from their last five league and cup games.

Latics, 1-0 ahead at the break, made a change at the break as Cliff Byrne replaced Connor Brown, presumably because he had been booked in the opening period. Reece Wabara reverted to right back as Byrne slotted in alongside M'voto.

Cristian Montano had an early chance to add to Latics' lead as he ghosted on from the left to meet a Lee Croft cross only to scuff his shot just wide.

Latics received a 52nd minute let off when Andy Bond's 25-yard shot took a wicked deflection over keeper Alex Cisak but fortunately struck the upright.

Cisak then turned over a dangerous cross from the left which was looping in, though referee Ian Williamson inexplicably awarded a goal kick.

Montano then fired in a fierce shot which forced keeper Mark Cousins into a fine save.

Latics needed a second goal and it came just after the hour when Derbyshire was released by a superb  pass from Croft.

Derbyshire raced into the box and his shot was saved by Cousins but appeared to take a ricochet off a covering defender as it trickled over the line.

Whether the goal is eventually credited to Derbyshire - it would be his seventh for the club - remains to be seen.

Latics had chances to add a third goal as Croft and Montano were both denied by super saves from Cousins.

Colchester had a great chance to half the deficit when Jabo Ibehre had a free header from an Ian Henderson cross, but could only direct it straight to Cisak.

Latics ought to have been awarded a last-minute penalty when Jose Baxter was clearly hauled back when he broke into the box, but Mr Williamson waved play on.

There were two substitutions from Latics in stoppage time when Croft and Montano were replaced by Robbie Simpson and Youssouf M'Changama.

Full-time: Colchester United 0, Latics 2.
