Byrne signs for Latics

27 July 2012

Experienced defender comes on board

Latics have completed the signing of experienced defender Cliff Byrne.

Manager Paul Dickov has revealed Latics have beaten off competition from a number of other clubs to sign the 30-year-old.

Byrne was freed by Scunthorpe United at the end of the season having made 332 first-team appearances for the Iron over a nine-year period.

The player tweeted: "Am delighted to announce that I am now an Oldham player. Can't wait for the season to start."

Dickov believes Byrne, who has trained with Latics for some of pre-season, will be a massive asset to the team.

He explained: "I have seen a lot of Cliff and he is comfortable at both centre back and right back.

"I am delighted the way our recruitment has gone and we needed experience, which Cliff provides, not just at the back but throughout the whole team.

"Cliff had been on our radar all summer and there was a lot of competition to sign him.

"Yet again, however, he was a player who wanted to come to us. He likes the training and atmosphere at the club.

"Cliff has played a lot of games and above all is a leader, both on and off the pitch."

Dickov added his side is well equipped at the back with Jean-Yves M'voto, James Tarkowski, Connor Brown, Jonathan Grounds, Byrne and keepers Alex Cisak and Dean Bouzanis.
