Grounds hits last-gasp winner

An injury-time goal from Jonathan Grounds (pictured) clinched victory for Latics against Premier League champions Manchester City in tonight's friendly at Boundary Park.

It was a terrific win for Latics against City who included many of their Euro 2012 stars, the likes of Joe Hart, Joleon Lescott, James Milner, Gael Clichy, Samir Nasri and Nigel de Jong.

Latics took an early lead through Robbie Simpson and held on to that advantage until 15 minutes from time, even though Roque Santa Cruz hit the upright late in the opening period.

It was Santa Cruz who equalised after Latics' keeper Alex Cisak collided with his team-mate Jean-Yves M'voto.

The Paraguayan striker seized on the mistake to cooly round Cisak to score.

Both sides made many late changes and the game was petering oujt into a draw until Grounds' dramatic late intervention.

Youssouf M'Changama's corner was headed back across the face of goal by M'voto and only cleared as far as left-back Grounds who volleyed into the bottom corner.

Another boost for Latics was the attendance of 6,589, of which 3,048 were City fans.
