Latics make winning start

18 July 2012

Non-league Mossley are beaten

Paul Dickov was pleased with Latics' first pre-season workout as they triumphed 3-0 at non-league Mossley.

Goals from Robbie Simpson (penalty), Matt Smith and Youssouf M'Changama helped Latics get off to a winning start in their pre-season campaign.

Latics' manager remarked: "I am satisfied, though we know we have more quality and are better than that.

"It was more about fitness and the boys had double sessions on Monday and Tuesday and we also worked them really hard on the morning of the match.

"We wanted them to come into the game tired and, given those circumstances and the state of the pitch, I have to be reasonably happy as we kept a clean sheet and scored three goals."

Dickov added that the most important thing was to give all the players 45 minutes football and at the moment the priority is about building up fitness.

"It is always good to win pre-season games but, as we have seen before, it means nothing if you lose the opening game of the season as we have done before."

Latics' manager only criticism is that his side did not triumph by a wider margin saying they need to be more clinical in front of goal.

Dickov added a bonus was that no players were injured.
