Cup exit for Latics

4 November 2012

Under-18's lack 'Iron'

Latics under-18's made a first-round exit in the Youth Alliance Cup losing 3-0 at home to Scunthorpe United.

Head of Youth Tony Philliskirk described it as a bad day at the office.

"It was a disappointing performance and it was the manner of the defeat which I was not happy about," he explained.

In fairness Latics were without seven players including Chris Sutherland and Joe Cooper who were on first-team duty.

Philliskirk described as positives the performances of striker Haydn Foulds as he continued on his road to recovery after an injury lay off and schoolboy Jack Tuohy.

Jack Truelove conceded the penalty which gave the Iron a 1-0 interval lead.

Latics conceded two further goals in the second period, both of which were poor defensively.

Philliskirk said: "The best team won on the day.

"We struggled to handle their front two and were dominated at both ends of the field."
