Dickov sets youngsters goals

27 November 2012

Manager tells players to believe

Paul Dickov has set a goal for young professionals David Mellor (pictured) and Kirk Millar to establish themselves as first-team regulars with Latics.

Latics' manager says he has spoken to both players following their return to Boundary Park following a loan spell at non-league Chorley.

Dickov said: "It was good to get the pair back involved on Saturday.

"I have had a long chat with both of them and told how they need to push on and believe they are first-team players and are not kids anymore.

"I want them knocking on the door to get into the first team and not simply to go through the motions and to be happy to be in squad."

It was back in March 2010 when Millar (20) made his first-team debut, but since then he had managed a total of only four starts and 13 substitute appearances.

Mellor (19) scored on his first-team debut early last season. He has now made 20 starts and five further appearances off the bench.
