Late goals sink Latics' Ladies

5 November 2012

Middleton triumph in derby clash

Oldham Athletic Ladies conceded two late goals as they suffered a 4-2 defeat against Middleton Athletic in the Greater Manchester Women's Open Age Football League, Division One.

Latics, who handed debuts to Sabrina Muller and Lauren Plowright, took the lead against the run of play through Lauren Steel through a shot from 25 yards.

Middleton, who had made the brighter start, carried on pressing and equalised through Chelsea Cook four minutes later.

Steel put Oldham back ahead after an hour racing on to a through ball before bending a shot into the far corner.

Again the lead lasted just four minutes when Jo O’Connell fired home to make it 2-2.

Middleton applied considerable pressure as the game moved into the last 15 minutes.

The woodwork saved Latics on two occasions but just as it looked like they would hold out for a point , Cook put Middleton in front with three minutes left after a defensive mistake. In the last minute keeper Dominique Marshall was again beaten, this time by Belinda Carter.

It was Latics' third successive defeat and it gets no easier on Sunday when they play away to AFC Oldham Ladies at Tate Street, Oldham, kick off 2pm.

Latics: Marshall, Green, Shaw, Mullen, Martin, Steel, Newton, Bennett, Deane, Muller, Plowright. Subs: Leech, Neal.
