Life membership award
The Board of Directors of The Football League has awarded a Life Membership to its former Chairman, Lord Mawhinney.
The award further recognises the exceptional contribution made by Lord Mawhinney (pictured) during a decade of service to the world’s original league football competition.
He also oversaw the major re-branding of The Football League in June 2004 and the formation of The Football League Trust.
Lord Mawhinney served as Chairman from January 2003 to March 2010, during which time The Football League embarked upon a substantive programme of governance reforms that included the introduction of football’s first Fit and Proper Person’s test, Sporting Sanctions for insolvent clubs, the publications of clubs’ spending on agents’ fees and the monitoring of their tax affairs.
Since standing down as Chairman, Lord Mawhinney has held the post of Honorary President, a position he will continue to fulfil for the remainder of the current season.
In announcing Lord Mawhinney’ Life Membership, Football League Chairman, Greg Clarke, said: "It has been a great privilege to succeed Lord Mawhinney in this role, given all he achieved during his time as Chairman. The Board and I are absolutely delighted that he has agreed to accept our offer of a Life Membership."
Lord Mawhinney said: "I am grateful to the Football League Board for its decision to grant me Life Membership and I look forward to enjoying it."
