Manager issues Howard warning

Paul Dickov has identified his former Leicester City team-mate Steve Howard as a major threat to Latics in tonight's npower League One match at Hartlepool United.

Latics' manager knows the burly striker will be a menacing to his back line, even in the autumn of his career at the age of 36.

Dickov warned: "Steve is a handful as our defenders will discover when he bashes them about.

"I watched Hartlepool recently against Tranmere and he was a handful."

Howard kicked off his career at Hartlepool and later played for Northampton, Luton, Derby and Leicester and was involved in two £1million plus transfers.

He has scored 206 career goals as a professional, though he has found the net only once in 19 appearances for Pools.

Howard was suspended for Saturday's home defeat by Coventry after collecting five yellow cards, but is set to return tonight at Victoria Park.
