Latics seek South African help

Latics have been unsuccessful in their plea to the South African Football Association to delay Dean Furman's international call up.

Manager Paul Dickov asked if his captain and influential midfield man could play against Sheffield United a week on Saturday.

That would have meant Furman missing the friendly in Poland next Friday but joining up with the squad for a game in Kenya four days later.

Dickov said: "We hoped the South African FA would let Dean stay with us until after the Sheffield United game.

"At the minute, they are indicating they want him to go (for both games) but we are not giving up."

Furman, who made his debut for South Africa last month against Brazil, is due to link up with South Africa on Tuesday.
