Unlucky Latics have two goals disallowed

Unlucky Latics had two first-half goals disallowed in their npower League One match at Crewe Alexandra.

Matt Derbyshire and Jose Baxter (pictured) both had efforts ruled out for offside in an opening period dominated by Latics who had 11 goal attempts and an incredible 74-per-cent possession.

Latics made an explosive start and could have been 2-0 ahead inside the opening two minutes.

A lucky ricochet released Derbyshire who set up Baxter whose goalbound shot was blocked by Kelvin Mellor.

Lee Croft then had a glorious chance only to see keeper Alan Martin pull off a brilliant save.

Crewe might have stolen ahead in the sixth minute when a near-post shot from Harry Davis, from a Gregor Robertson corner, clipped the outside of the upright.

Reece Wabara fired narrowly over and Cristian Montano forced Martin into a diving save as Latics remained the more dangerous side.

Latics had the ball in the net midway through the half only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Croft's shot was parried by Martin and Derbyshire slotted in the rebound.

Montano's fiercely struck shot troubled Martin before Latics had a second goal disallowed.

This time Baxter glanced a header low past Martin from a Montano cross, though the striker was clearly offside.

Montano then saw a shot deflected narrowly wide as the opening half was a non-stop onslaught from Latics.

Latics had another great chance to take the lead in the 41st minute when Montano robbed Mellor in the box.

Montano's shot was parried by Martin and Baxter blazed wide of an open goal. He threw himself to the ground in disbelief.

Latics were dealt an injury blow on the stroke of half time when Jean-Yves M'voto limped out of the game after injuring his left leg. He was immediately replaced by James Tarkowski.

And in stoppage time, Crewe almost stole ahead when a diving header by Mellor from inside the six-yard box flew narrowly wide.

Half-time: Crewe 0, Latics 0.
