First-half report

Latics blunt Blades

Latics more than matched high-flying Sheffield United in their npower League One match at Bramall Lane.

They had the better of the chances in a closely contested opening period.

Latics kicked off with Robbie Simpson taking over Dean Furman's midfield role as Jose Baxter and Matt Derbyshire remained the front pairing.

And Simpson (pictured) could have given Latics the lead after only 30 seconds, but he glanced a header wide from Baxter's free kick.

After the initiai flurry of early action, the game hit a lull as each side cancelled out the other.

Latics made the ball in the net in the 19th minute only to have the effort ruled out.

Simpson's fiercely-struck shot from outside the box was parried by keeper George Long but Jonathan Grounds, who hit home the rebound, had strayed offside.

Cliff Byrne headed well wide from a free kick, but chances at either end were at a premium.

Half-time: Sheff Utd 0, Latics 0.
