Latics being held

Latics were held during a goalless opening half of their npower League One match at Carlisle United.

It was a period of few chances with the disappointing game yet to ignite.

Latics' keeper Dean Bouzanis was called into action after only one minute diving low to his left to keep out a shot from Liam Noble.

Carlisle made the livelier start without ever looking like scoring.

Both teams were temporarily reduced to 10 men when Jean-Yves M'voto (pictured) and Joe Garner had to go off for cuts to be treated following a clash of heads.

Latics' first goal attempt came in the 17th minute, but Jose Baxter dragged his long-range shot well wide.

That was quickly followed by a headed chance by M'voto, but he could not direct Baxter's free kick on target.

Latics' best chance came after half an hour when Jonathan Grounds and Matt Derbyshire combined to release Lee Croft whose angled shot was beaten out by keeper Mark Gillespie.

Carlisle came within a whisker of taking the lead in the 37th minute when Noble connected with a Matty Robson cross only to see his shot deflect just wide of the upright.

Half-time: Carlisle 0, Latics 0.
