Gosset is Latics' matchwinner

14 October 2012

Danny's the boy

Danny Gosset scored the only goal of the game as Latics' under-18's defeated Shrewsbury Town 1-0 at Chapel Road in the Football League Youth Alliance's North West Conference.

The goal came midway through the opening half and followed a fine passing move involving Jack Poxon, Gosset and Carlton McIntosh whose cross was met by Gosset who got in-between two defenders to head home.

The game was a mirror image of 1-0 wins against Port Vale and Tranmere as they ought to have won comfortably.

They dominated from start to finish but missed a succession of chances.

At the back Tomos Clarke and Ryan Ellison were outstanding - keeper Joel Coleman hardly had a shot to save - while Gosset was excellent as he enjoyed his best game of the season.

Gosset had a header cleared off the line while Luke Wandless, McIntosh and Jordan Bove missed chances which could have had Latics out of sight by the break.

The second half continued in the same vein, though Shrewsbury had a 15-minute spell midway through the second period when they wrestled back control.

Latics were still a threat during that time on the counter, but just couldn't find a way to goal.

Head of Youth Tony Philliskirk says his only complaint was his team was not ruthless enough in front of goal.

He added, however, he was pleased with the quality of the football they played and also the way they kept hold of the ball.
