Duxbury on big cup win

Lee Duxbury told how practice made perfect as Latics' reserves triumphed this afternoon at Blackburn Rovers in the Lancashire Senior Cup.

Reserve-team manager Duxbury revealed the extent of their preparations after they won a penalty shootout following a goalless 90 minutes.

"We had a practice match against the youth team and yesterday worked on shape and set pieces," he explained.

Duxbury added Latics' game plan worked to a tee as they mixed up their play.

He was especially pleased with their defensive play keeping a clean sheet against an attack which included Colin Kazim-Richards.

"We played well as a team and also individually there were some very good performances. It was a team effort and hard to single out individuals," he continued.

Duxbury did praise Youssouf M'Changama and Carl Winchester, however, saying they did well in the centre of midfield.

And he added that playing against a Rovers side which included three full internationals raised the ante.

He explained: "Had we been playing somebody like Macclesfield Town, we would have been expected to win.

"If we are playing Manchester United or Blackburn we are not expected to win but the players want to express themselves and show how good they are."
