Second-half report

Latics bag first home win

Latics secured their long-awaited first home win of the season in style as they defeated Preston North End 3-1 in npower League One.

Goals from Jose Baxter, Cristian Montano with his first for the club, and Dean Furman made it lucky seven for Latics after six previous failed attempts.

The only blemish was the injury-time goal they gifted to the visitors.

Latics, 1-0 ahead at the break through a Baxter free kick, came within a whisker of doubling their lead soon after the restart.

And it was Baxter who again was in the thick of the action as his overhead kick was superbly turned away by keeper Thorsten Stuckmann diving low to his left.

Latics scored a second goal in the 57th minute following a wonderful passing move.

Baxter was involved but it was Jonathan Grounds whose defence-splitting pass released Montano (pictured) who raced clear to slot the ball low to the left of Stuckmann.

Latics were in the ascendancy as Matt Derbyshire had two chances to increase the lead as he fired wide and then had another effort beaten out by Stuckmann.

They added a third goal in the 69th minute when Furman robbed Joel Byrom and raced clear to slot the ball low past Stuckmann.

And Preston's woes increased with 11 minutes left when they had central-defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff sent off after picking up two yellow cards in the space of seven minutes.

Latics made their second switch with six minutes remaining when Robbie Simpson replaced Baxter who had moments earlier been named sponsors' man of the match.

And not long after came their last change as Youssouf M'Changama replaced Montano.

Preston got on to the scoresheet with the last kick of the match in the 94th minute.

Grounds' header failed to reach Dean Bouzanis as substitute Akpo Sodje nipped in to slot an angled shot low past Latics' keeper.

Full-time: Latics 3, Preston North End 1.
