Taylor in transition

Dan's the man for Latics

Paul Dickov believes Daniel Taylor has a big future with Latics, even though he has only made two first-team appearances as a substitute following his summer move from Newcastle United.

Latics manager described it as a "transitional" season for the 19-year-old striker.

He said: "With Dan it has been a massive transition and we still believe he will be a big player for us.

"It was always going to be a transitional year for him.

"It is the first time he has moved away from home and for a 19-year-old kid to leave his family is a big thing.

"It is also the first time he has played proper football in terms of being involved with a first-team squad and it takes time to adjust."

Dickov added Taylor has shown glimpses of the form which last season made him top scorer for Newcastle's reserves and academy sides.

"In recent reserve games there have been signs he is getting to the standard we know he can do," he said.

He also hinted he may consider a loan move to give Taylor the opportunity to play regular first-team football as his chances are limited with Matt Derbyshire, Jose Baxter, Robbie Simpson and Matt Smith currently ahead of him at Boundary Park.
