Reserve-team manager on Walsall win

Reserve-team manager Lee Duxbury described Latics as lucky as they beat Walsall 3-2 in the Central League at Chapel Road.

Two goals from Matt Smith and a strike from Youssouf M'Changama, he maintained, masked an indifferent display.

"I would say we only played well for 15 minutes," he said.

"I was unhappy with the performance, but not the result. Usually it is the other way."

Duxbury was displeased with the way his side managed the game.

He explained: "All three of our goals came from crosses, but we didn't put in enough to work their keeper more.

"I told the players to mix it up and get the ball to the wingers because strikers Matt Smith and Daniel Taylor were a threat.

"We didn't do that which is disappointing."

Duxbury added his players couldn't handle Walsall's style of play.

He said: "We didn't have enough lads willing to go the ugly side.

"We didn't deserve to win and, even when 3-1 ahead, we became sloppy and conceded another goal."

Duxbury added he is also trying to make his players "intellectual."

He explained: "Instead of me shouting from the touchline, I want them to work out things for themselves.

"They need to know how to win games and how to stop the opposition from playing without me telling them.

"It will take time but, at the end of the day, a win is a win."
