Baxter's dual Latics' role

27 September 2012

Manager prefers Jose as front man

Jose Baxter has provided Paul Dickov with a dilemma in the early stages of his Latics' career.

The former Everton player has featured as both a striker and midfielder in his first three matches for Latics.

Baxter (pictured) came on as a substitute and scored as a striker against Notts County, but then came off the bench with midfield cameos in against Scunthorpe and Brentford.

And it sparked considerable debate as to Baxter's best position with many believing the player is a bigger threat as an out-and-out front man.

Latics' manager agrees, but explained why he has been playing in midfield.

He said: "It is a case when we are drawing to get as many attacking players on to the pitch as possible.

"When I have changed things and gone more attacking, Jose can get forward from midfield.

"More often than not, however, I see him as a forward which I regard as his best position."
