Matt on his move to Latics

Matt Derbyshire is looking forward to getting match action during his loan spell with Latics.

The 26-year-old striker admitted his chances of securing a first-team place at npower Championship club Nottingham Forest were limited.

"Forest have eight strikers and the gaffer (Sean O'Driscoll) only plays one up front which doesn't suit me," explained Derbyshire.

"I need to be playing football which is why I was happy to come here when Paul Dickov game me a call."

Derbyshire signed a loan until October 27th at lunchtime having trained with the team for the first time today.

He continued: "I enjoyed the training and there are a good set of lads here.

"I just want to play games and let people know I am still out there."

Derbyshire kicked off his career at Blackburn Rovers appearing for them in the Premier League and being capped by England at under-21 level.

He joined Greek club Olympiakos in 2009, initially on loan before  signing a four-year contract following a £3million move.

Derbyshire helped Olympiakos win the Greek League and Cup.

"One of the reasons why I joined them was to play in the Champions League which I achieved when we reached the last 16," he continued.

A change of coach at Olympiakos saw Derbyshire told he did not feature in the plans of Ernesto Valverde and he subsequently joined Birmingham City on a season-long loan.

He then returned to Olympiakos briefly before signing for Forest in August 2011.

Derbyshire says the last couple of seasons have been frustating due to a number of injuries and also been struck down by shingles, but he is looking to making a new start in 2012/13.
