First-half report

18 September 2012

Derbyshire strikes again

Latics came from behind to level the scores in their npower League One game against Scunthorpe United at Boundary Park.

Former Latics' loanee Leon Clarke, a player they were recently linked with again, put the Iron ahead with his third goal in as many games at the start of a loan spell from Charlton Athletic.

Latics equalised late in the half when Matt Derbyshire (pictured) scored in successive games at the start of his loan spell from Nottingham Forest.

Latics could not have made a worse start as the Iron stole ahead in the third minute.

Mark Duffy's chip found Clarke who produced an excellent turn before firing low to the right of keeper Dean Bouzanis from 12 yards.

Latics created a couple of clear-cut chances as Derbyshire forced a diving save from Sam Slocombe while Matt Smith headed over when well placed from a Lee Croft cross.

The Iron could have doubled their advantage as Jimmy Ryan saw a header flash just wide of the upright and the same player's goalbound shot was deflected by Smith for a corner.

Karl Hawley then saw a shot flying narrowly wide as the visitors created danger every time they attacked and not long after saw his curled goal attempt brilliantly turned round the post by Bouzanis.

After being second best for much of the half, Latics equalised five minutes before the break.

Jonathan Grounds' low cross from the left was converted at the near post by Derbyshire.

The Iron almost regained the lead moments later but Bouzanis made a brilliant block to deny the livewire Hawley.

Then on the stroke of half time, Latics almost snatched the lead when Smith's near-post header from Cristian Montono's cross was kept out by a superb flying save from Slocombe.

Half-time: Latics 1, Scunthorpe 1.
