First-half report

29 September 2012

Early Latics' promise fades

Latics and Coventry City fought out a goalless opening half of their npower League One match at Boundary Park.

It was a period of few goalscoring opportunities with neither side looking like breaking the deadlock.

Latics made a bright start creating three scoring chances in the opening eight minutes.

Cristiano Montano brought a fine save from Dean Bouzanis to turn over his drive, Jose Baxter shot straight at the keeper while Jean-Yves M'voto headed harmlessly wide from a corner by Lee Croft (pictured).

The early promise soon disappeared to be replaced by a dour contest with neither side looking likely to break the stalemate.

Baxter did his best to brighten the afternoon trying to beat Murphy with a shot from almost half way and then glancing a header well wide from a Reece Wabara cross.

Coventry's best chance of the half came in stoppage time when David McGoldrick shot over at the near post from a Gary McSheffrey left-wing cross.

Half-time: Latics 0, Coventry City 0.
