Grounds for optimism

Left-back on Latics' first win

Jonathan Grounds was more interested in the importance of Latics' victory at Portsmouth than claiming the match-winning goal.

The left-back fired over the cross which centre-back Johnny Ertl deflected into his own net.

Grounds said: "It was important after the results we have had, especially at home, that we came away and got something.

"The way we approached the game beforehand, we were definitely coming for all three points.

"And after a gritty, battling performance, we managed to achieve that."

Grounds says he will have to view the goal again before deciding whether to claim it.

He continued: "I am not sure whether it was on target.

"I was trying to find quite a number of our lads who were on the back post and their lad got a nick and diverted it past their keeper."

Grounds added that after a slow start they grew in the game and had some good chances to have won by a wider margin.

He said: "We finished the opening period strongly and that lifted us to come out in the second half and have a really good go which we did.

"We said at half time we felt we could win which we did.

"It is always important to get the first win, but now we must build on it at Chesterfield in the JPT on Tuesday."
