Latics look at former Everton wonderkid
Former Everton player Jose Baxter is on trial with Latics. The 20-year-old striker is a free agent having in the summer rejected the offer of a new two-year contract with the Toffees.
Baxter had spent one month on trial pre-season with Crystal Palace playing in five friendlies.
Latics' manager Paul Dickov said: "Jose came in last week and we are looking at him and he at us.
"There is no doubt about his ability, but he has been unfortunate.
"Everton offered Baxter a new contract and the only reason he turned it down was because he wanted to play regular football.
"He went to Crystal Palace and did well pre-season and was offered a contract but, for some reason, it didn't happen."
Bootle-born Baxter had been at Everton from the age of six and became their youngest first-team player at the age of 16 years and 191 days in 2009 beating the record previously held by James Vaughan.
Baxter made 15 first-team appearances for Everton and 14 on loan last season at Tranmere Rovers for whom he scored three goals, including one against Latics.
