Latics escape FA fine

5 September 2012

Byrne ruling gives club lift

Latics have escaped a £2,500 fine from the Football Association for poor discipline on the pitch.

They received the automatic penalty after having six players shown cards in the npower League One win at Portsmouth.

However, Cliff Byrne's successful appeal against his sending off at Fratton Park took Latics below the threshold for the fine.

Latics had Jean-Yves M'voto, Matt Smith, Cristian Montano, Jonathan Grounds and Connor Brown booked.

Brown was also later handed a three-match ban after Byrne's successful appeal for mistaken identity with the right back forced to take the punishment following his off-the-ball spat with Pompey's Jordan Obita who was also shown the red card.
