Lauren's steely show

15 September 2012

Four goals for striker

They continued to apply pressure and Shelby Newton doubled the advantage in the sixth minute.

Latics went ahead after four minutes when Steel scored her first goal for the club.

It was an excellent start for Latics and all the new players integrated well into the side.

Lauren Steel scored four goals as Oldham Athletic Ladies defeated Heyside Angels 6-3 in their opening game of the season.

As the team started to get into their stride there was some great passing and moving and the team looked good as a whole. With only 22 minutes on the clock, Newton struck again to make it 3-0 before Angels pulled a goal back late in the half.

Steel scored her second goal early in the second half only for Angels to reply quickly to reduce their deficit to 4-2.

At this point, Latics brought on Morgan Leech in place for Sarah Mullen. Leech settled into her role at right back and kept the attacks from the opposition on that side at bay.

Newton was denied her hat trick when her strike was ruled out for offside.

Steel completed her hat-trick on the hour with Latics' fifth goal.

Though Angels scored a third goal, Latics emerged emphatic victors.

Steel came up trumps again scoring her fourth goal and Latics' sixth with 11 minutes remaining.
