Super-sub sinks Latics

A last-minute goal from substitute Cody McDonald sank Latics who were beaten 1-0 at home by Coventry City in npower League One.

Latics once again had their chances, but were unable to find a way to goal for the second successive game.

Coventry had a great chance to take the lead in the 51st minute when Conor Henderson curled a shot from 25 yards just wide of the upright.

It looked increasingly likely one piece of magic would settle the match....and Jose Baxter (pictured) almost provided that.

The striker produced a wonder effort out of nothing as his drive from 30 yards struck the upright with keeper Joe Murphy well beaten.

Latics made another glorious chance to take the lead midway through the half when Lee Croft opened up the Coventry defence and from his cross Derbyshire's close-range shot was well kept out by Murphy with Jordan Clarke scrambling the ball to safety from almost on the goalline.

Derbyshire produced a neat turn to create an opening for himself as his strike from outside the box forced a diving save from Murphy.

Latics had a massive let off with 11 minutes left when McDonald, stretching to meet John Fleck's low cross, shot wide from six yards with only keeper Dean Bouzanis to beat.

Bouzanis was called into action to turn a Jamie Reckord shot round the post for a corner as Coventry became more of a threat in the latter stages.

And Coventry snatched victory with a 90th minute goal.

Jamie Reckord crossed from the left and McDonald stooped to direct a header from six yards low to the left of Bouzanis.

And it might have got even worse for Latics as in the fourth minute of stoppage time Bouzanis pulled off a brilliant double save to deny David McGoldrick and McDonald.

Full-time: Latics 0, Coventry City 1.
