First start for Brown, Tarkowski on bench

Connor Brown was handed his first start by Latics in this afternoon's npower League One match at Portsmouth.

The teenager (pictured) got his chance at right back as Cliff Byrne switched to the centre of defence where James Tarkowski lost out as he dropped down to the bench.

The second change from the starting line up against Stevenage last Saturday saw striker Jordan Slew return after injury for Carl Winchester.

Pompey handed debuts to deadline-day signings Johnny Ertl and Darel Russell.

Such are the South Coast club's dire financial problems that they were only able to name five of seven permitted substitutes.

Portsmouth (4-5-1): Anderson; Dumbuya, Connolly, Ertl, Harley; Obita, Walker, Howard, Russell, Compton; McLeod. Subs: Eastwood, Rodgers, Clifford, Harris, Webster.

Latics (4-4-2): Cisak; Brown, Byrne, M'voto, Grounds; Croft, Furman, M'Changama, Montano; Simpson, Slew. Subs: Bouzanis, Tarkowski, Smith, Taylor, Millar, Hughes, Winchester.
