Jose on Latics' poor form and penalties

Jose Baxter is mystified by Latics' poor form and the fact they are embroiled in a battle against relegation from npower League One.

The former Everton player (pictured) believes Latics ought not to be languishing in the lower reaches of the table.

Baxter said: "There is quality in the team as shown with the FA Cup run.

"We have also competed well against some of the top teams in our league and the lads are wondering why we are down there.

"It is down to the luck of the draw. We have battered teams for 89 minutes and then they have scored in the 90th.

"We need to concentrate for the full 90/95 minutes and get the points on the board.

"I believe we definitely have enough in the locker to get out of trouble."

Baxter has also given his thoughts about penalty taking in the wake of his miss against AFC Bournemouth when he tried a cheeky chip down the middle only for it to be saved.

The midfield man added that the Carlisle players were trying to distract him by shouting to their keeper that he would be chipping it.

Baxter made no mistake by scoring in the corner after sending keeper Mark Gillespie the wrong way.

He said: "Most keepers dive and I decided to send it the other way.

"I always have a mindset that as soon as I score a penalty, I always know exactly where to go the next time.

"When you miss a penalty, you are the worst player in the world. When you score you are the best."
