Death of Kevin Moore

30 April 2013

Local journalist Fred Austin also passes away

Latics have been saddened to hear of the deaths of former player Kevin Moore (pictured) and also journalist Fred Austin who covered the club's fortunes for almost half a century.

Kevin, who had been suffering from Pick's Disease, a rare form of dementia, died yesterday on his 55th birthday.

The central defender had a short spell with Latics in 1986/87, the season they reached the promotion play offs.

Kevin, who was signed from Grimsby Town, made 15 appearances for Latics scoring one goal.

In a 20-year playing career with Grimsby, Latics, Southampton and Fulham, Kevin made 753 appearances and scored 56 goals.

Fred passed away on Saturday at Fairfield Hospital, Bury, after a short illness at the age of 69.

He began working for the Oldham Press Agency and covering Latics in his teens.

And he continued reporting from Boundary Park until four years ago when he had to stand down due to ill health.

Fred, who lived in Greenacres, also did shift work for national newspapers and had a spell as a script writer for the television programme 'This Is Your Life.'

Fred, who wrote a column 'Right Said Fred' in Latics' matchday programme for many years, leaves his wife Elaine, son Jon, daughter Francesca and grandsons Corey and Marley.
