Delight at new stand go-ahead

Chairman's praise for Council

Latics' Chairman Simon Corney's emotion was one of delight after Oldham Athletic's application for a new North Stand at Boundary Park was approved by Oldham Council's Planning Committee.

Mr Corney said: "It is very good news and the culmination of a lot of hard by by the Council and the football club.

"We have worked together and, without that, we would not have got where we are today. We are very grateful for their help."

Mr Corney added there is still much work to be done before the construction begins.

He continued: "Now we have planning consent, we can crack on and get things moving.

"There is still a lot of work to be done, but we are moving in the right direction."

Jim McMahon, Oldham Council Leader, said: “Tonight’s news is fantastic for the Borough and represents a landmark decision after a lengthy process of working incredibly hard alongside Oldham Athletic.
“All parties wanted to find the right solution here that could deliver a better stadium and, crucially, a facility that can start generating vital new sources of off-the-field revenue to secure the club’s long-term financial future.

“Latics’ recent heroics in the FA Cup this season were a very timely reminder of their importance and unique ability to put our town on the national map in a positive way.

“I wish Simon Corney, the club, players and supporters every success in their battle to avoid relegation from League One so that they can all start looking ahead again with renewed confidence for a much brighter future.”
