First-half report

23 April 2013

Weale denies Latics

Goalkeeper Chris Weale denied Latics with three important saves in a goalless opening half of their npower League One match at Shrewsbury Town.

Latics had the better openings but could not find a way past home custodian Weale.

Latics' first chance came in the 11th minute when Lee Croft shot narrowly wide from 25 yards.

The Shrews ought to have taken the lead moments later when Akwasi Asante burst clean through on goal only to fire wide with only Cisak to beat.

Weale pulled off a fine stop to keep out a shot from Kirk Millar (pictured), Latics' best opening of the early exchanges.

The keeper had to pull off another decent save low to his left after Jose Baxter tried to curl in an effort from 25 yards.

Latics were forced to make a substitution after only 25 minutes when Jonathan Grounds went off injured to be replaced by Robbie Simpson as Cristian Montano dropped back to left back.

Weale had to make another important save low to his right to turn away Baxter's well struck free kick.

Cisak had to be alert shortly before half time to turn a 30-yard free kick from Jon Taylor round the post for a corner.

Baxter came within a whisker of taking the lead in stoppage time when his header from Croft's cross flashed just wide of the upright.

Half-time: Shrewsbury Town 0, Latics 0.
