Latics fall behind to early goal

Latics fell behind to an early goal from Jimmy Smith in their npower League One match at Leyton Orient.

Smith struck in the ninth minute with the O's only serious attack of the half.

Latics made a bright start and have an early shout for a penalty rejected when Korey Smith (pictured) went sprawling to the ground in the penalty area.

Kirk Millar and Lee Croft both had shots blocked in the same move as Latics looked lively.

The O's took the lead with their first attack of the game when Jimmy Smith was released on the right by a long ball from Romain Vincelot and he raced into the box and fired an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

Croft also shot inches over with a terrific shot after being released by Jose Baxter who was Latics' captain for the day.

There was a let off when Glenn Belezika's interception ran back to keeper Dean Bouzanis who picked up the ball.

Referee Fred Graham interpreted it as a back pass and awarded a free kick to the O's inside the box which Latics defended well.

Latics had a chance to equalise shortly before half time, but Carl Winchester fired just over.

Half-time: Leyton Orient 1, Latics 0.
