Greater Manchester Police have issued the following statement in the wake of Latics' fans being locked out of Saturday's npower League One match at Bury.

"It was anticipated by Bury FC that between 1,500 and 2,000 Oldham fans intended to attend this fixture, and therefore they could have been seated in the West Stand.

"Shortly before kick off it was apparent that the West Stand was full to capacity, with approximately 150 Oldham fans on the forecourt queuing in an attempt to get into the West Stand.

"The Club Safety Officer made the decision, which was supported by the police, in the interests of safety no more Oldham fans would be permitted entry to the ground.

"Consideration was given by the Club to facilitate another part of the ground for Oldham fans, but regrettably no another area could be safely secured in the short time that was available before the game kicked off.

"The fans remained on the forecourt and Bury Football Club informed these fans of the Club's decision and the reasons why. This group, to their credit, despite being disappointed dispersed peacefully from the forecourt.

"While it is regrettable that some of the Oldham fans could not gain entry to the game, the safety of the public is our number one priority.

"During the course of the day 10 people were arrested for minor public order offences. The good behaviour of both sets of fans has been recognised and applauded by Bury FC and GMP."
