Latics are staying up

Latics are staying up after securing a 2-1 home npower League One victory against Crawley Town.

A goal deep into injury time from Jean-Yves M'voto (pictured) removed any threat of Latics being relegated.

Latics took the lead through Matt Smith, Mark Connolly equalised for Crawley before M'voto scored in stoppage time to make it three wins in a row.

After a goalless opening half, Crawley made the brighter start to the second period as Billy Clarke shot wide while Paul Hayes brought a decent save from Dean Bouzanis,

But it was Latics who took the lead in the 57th minutes as Smith scored for the third successive match and took his season's total to 11.

Smith picked up a pass from Lee Croft in the middle of the park and advanced forward before unleashing a powerful drive from the edge of the box low past keeper Paul Jones.

Latics made their first change midway through the second half when Lee Barnard was replaced by Kirk Millar. Crawley made all three of their substitutions at the same time.

That was soon followed by the appearance of top scorer Jose Baxter who took over from goalscorer Smith who left the field to a standing ovation.

Latics could have added a second goal when Simpson's powerful 25-yard drive was beaten out by Jones.

Crawley equalised in the 76th minute with a goal from Connolly.

Mat Sadler's short corner was played to Billy Clarke whose cross took a deflection to the far post where Connolly had a free header from a couple of yards.

But Latics snatched victory in the 92nd minute when M'voto popped up at the far post to head home a left-wing free kick from Baxter which sparked wild celebrations.

And after the final whistle the player returned on to the pitch to thank fans for their support during the 2012/13 season.

Full-time: Latics 2, Crawley Town 1.
