Latics undone by Rodwell hat trick

Jack Rodwell helped propel Manchester City reserves to a 4-0 victory against Latics reserves in the Manchester Senior Cup at Boundary Park.

Midfield man Rodwell, a summer signing from Everton, scored a hat trick in a comfortable City victory.

Latics, 1-0 down at the break to a Rodwell header, fell further behind soon after the restart then Rodwell found the top corner with a powerful drive from outside the penalty area.

Denis Suarez made it 3-0 with a classy finish following a solo run in the 77th minute.

And Rodwell completed his hat trick from the penalty spot with seven minutes left after Micah Richards was tripped by Joe Cooper.

Latics were unlucky not to find the net as Danny Gosset had two terrific efforts.

First a fierce drive was deflected for a corner and then a free kick was brilliantly tipped over the bar by keeper Ian Lawlor.

Full-time: Latics reserves 0, Man City reserves 4.
