Tarkowski catches Johnson's eye

Manager impressed with young defender

Young defender James Tarkowski has impressed new Latics' manager Lee Johnson.

The 20-year-old (pictured) produced another eye-catching performance in yesterday's home game against Colchester Unitted.

The match also marked the 50th career appearance of the youngster from New Moston.

Johnson said: "I have been impressed with James who is turning into a man.

"Since I have been here, I can see already that he has the chance to be a top, top player.

"He has impressed me with his leadership skills on the pitch for such a young boy and he has a bright future."

In the three matches since Johnson took charge, Tarkowski has played against seasoned strikers like Hartlepool's veteran Steve Howard, experienced Swindon front man Andy Williams and Colchester's burly Jabo Ibehre.

Johnson said: "He has come against some seasoned strikers and done very well.

"I have been talking to him a lot and he knows he is part of the plans for the future.

"It is as much about mental strength as about fitness, especially in the last 20/30 minutes of games. And in fairness he has shown that in the last couple of games which has been pleasing."
