Latics hit by Jacobs' cracker

Despite a spirited first-half showing, Latics found themselves 1-0 behind to Championship club Derby County at Boundary Park in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

Michael Jacobs put the Rams ahead with the only goal of an evenly-contested opening period.

Latics had the first chance of the match in the fifth minute when Cristian Montano cut in from the left and his shot was blocked and rebounded to James Dayton who fired over.

The in-form Montano (pictured) then forced a diving save from Lee Grant with an angled shot from the left.

Jonson Clarke-Harris shot over after Korey Smith's defence-splitting pass released Connor Brown who delivered the perfect cross as Latics made a terrific start.

Yet Derby almost stole ahead with their first serious attack when Jacobs headed against the bar from a Paul Coutts corner.

Latics were not so lucky when they fell behind to a goal from Jacobs in the 20th minute.

Conor Sammon was released on the left and his low cross was converted by Jacobs with a near-post shot high into the roof of the net.

And Derby almost doubled their lead after half an hour when Jeff Hendrick's 30-yard drive brought a brilliant flying save from Mark Oxley.

Dayton had a long-distance shot deflected just wide with Grant beaten hands down as he stood rooted to the spot.

And Latics finished the half strongly when, in stoppage time, Montano's drive brought a good diving save from Grant.

Half-time: Latics 0, Derby County 1.
