Latics behind to Britt goal

Latics trailed to a goal from Britt Assombalonga at half time in their Sky Bet League 1 match at Peterborough United.

The striker struck a peach of a goal, the third since his summer move from Watford for a reported £1.2million fee, to break the deadlock.

Latics were unlucky to be behind as they were the better side for long periods of the opening period at London Road.

It was easy to see from the kick off why games involving Peterborough have no shortage of goals.

Peterborough bombed forward from the start taking risks as they committed men forward.

In only the second minute Latics produced a 4 v 2 counter attack which ended with a shot from James Dayton being blocked.

Cristian Montano then made a break down the left as he slipped the ball inside to Dayton whose 25-yard drive flew straight to keeper Bobby Olejnik.

Latics came within a whisker of taking an 11th minute lead when a header from Adam Rooney (pictured) following Montano's free kick brought an acrobatic save from Olejnik to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Jose Baxter fired a free kick from 25 yards well over after James Wesolowski had been fouled by Grant McCann within shooting range.

Peterborough snatched the lead in the 34th minute with their first chance of the match.

Baxter lost possession in midfield as Assombalonga broke before firing a terrific shot from 22 yards low to the right of keeper Mark Oxley.

Half-time: Peterborough 1, Latics 0.
