Johnson praises Italian

Manager impressed by new-boy Lanzoni

Lee Johnson believes new Italian signing Matteo Lanzoni will be a hit at Boundary Park.

Latics' manager has been impressed by the 25-year-old centre back who has been on trial for the last fortnight.

Johnson revealed it was a former Kilmarnock team-mate who recommended Lanzoni.

He said: "I was alerted to Matteo's availability by my good friend Manuel Pascali, the Kilmarnock captain.

"He knows a lot of players in Italy and the profile of Matteo fitted what I was looking for so I invited him over so we could each have a look at each other.

"He has played a decent level in Serie B and C1 which is similar to here.

Latics' manager added that Lanzoni, who has represented Italy at under 19 level, has impressed him in training.

He continued: "His attributes - he is aggressive and good on the ball - are more suited to the English game.

"Matteo is a fantastic professional and I am looking forward to working with him."

Lanzoni is looking forward to forging a new chapter of his career in England.

He explained: "I am happy to be here and hoping to stay a long time.

"I have been training here for the last two weeks and it has been a fantastic experience.

"I watched the game against Port Vale and was impressed with the standard of the football.

"It has been a dream to play in English football which is better than in Italy."
