Tarkowski scores season's opening goal

In view of the firepower at Latics' disposal, it was a surprise the first goal of the season came from a central defender.

James Tarkowski had the honour of scoring Latics' opener in the 4-3 victory at Stevenage in Sky Bet League 1.

It was a terrific finish, a first-time shot from Jose Baxter's free kick.

Tarkowski, who usually scores with headers from set pieces, said: "I managed to get my leg to the ball from Jose Baxter's free kick and luckily it went in.

"I was disappointed not to get one in the first half when it was disallowed.

"I still don't know why it wasn't given, though there was some suggestion it might have been handball which it wasn't.

"As far as I am concerned I got to the ball before the keeper and it was a clean header."

Tarkowski was delighted with the win saying when they open up teams they are hard to deal with.

"Our forwards are dangerous all over the pitch. We have players who have everything - jinking, strong and quick," he explained.
