Oldham Athletic statement

29 August 2013

Oldham Athletic and Mark Corbett wish to clarify events which have been widely reported in recent press articles regarding a minor motoring accident on the club's car park.

The incident did not involve three players' cars as has been stated and Mark continued working at the club after the incident and did not quit immediately after as has been suggested.

Mark had been helping out at the club as a volunteer and was not on a trial.

In addition, reports that he had been neither seen nor heard from since the accident were entirely untrue. Although Mark subsequently ceased volunteering, his decision to leave was unconnected to the accident.

Mark said: "It had never crossed my mind that the incident would be of even the remotest interest to anybody as a news story, so that in itself was a surprise.

"The biggest shock was getting panicked family and friends on the phone thinking nobody knew where I was and telling me I was supposedly very depressed. That was certainly news to me!

"Some had even interpreted the story to mean that I'd done a runner without reporting the accident. Fortunately I was able to put their minds at rest very quickly so hopefully nobody was unnecessarily concerned for long.

"I enjoyed helping out. There are a lot of nice people working at the club, some of whom I wasn't previously aware of, so it was nice to get to know them and see what a good job they do. It's a shame I can no longer spare the time.”
