Philliskirk's treble chance

20 August 2013

Three goals for Danny in reserve-team victory

Danny Philliskirk scored a hat trick as Latics reserves defeated Tranmere Rovers 3-1 at Chapel Road in Central League, West Division.

The striker (pictured), who is on non-contract forms, pressed home his claims for a first-team spot with a masterclass of finishing.

It helped Latics maintain their unbeaten start to their league campaign which has seen them collect four points from their first two matches.

Latics took a 10th minute lead when Sidney Schmeltz opened up the Tranmere defence on the right before cutting the ball back for Philliskirk to fire home.

Tranmere equalised when right-back Danny Holmes headed home from a corner midway through the opening period.

Latics had to wait until the 69th minute before regaining the lead.

Right-back Glenn Belezika broke forward and cut the ball back to Philliskirk who shot high into the roof of the net from eight yards.

Kirk Millar was unlucky not to find the net as keeper Jason Mooney pulled off a fine save to deny him.

There was no stopping Philliskirk, however, as he produced a great strike on the turn after being set up by Belezika and Danny Gosset.

Late on, Latics could have added to their goal tally as Mooney thwarted Millar for a second time, a drive from Anton Rodgers flashed just wide while Philliskirk could have added a fourth goal as he chipped narrowly wide.
