Latics back to winning ways

Adam Rooney and James Dayton both broke their scoring ducks for Latics who returned to winning ways in Sky Bet League 1 with a 3-1 home victory against Port Vale.

Striker Rooney twice found the net and winger Dayton (pictured) also scored as Latics ended their three match losing streak in style.

Latics, who restarted with the score 1-1, had a great chance to regain the lead early in the second half but James Tarkowski failed to find the target with a free header from a Dayton free kick.

They went back in front in the 56th minute when Rooney struck for a second time.

Latics carved open the Vale defence in a move which ended with Jonson Clarke-Harris' shot being blocked before rebounding invitingly for Rooney to slot home into an empty net.

Vale came within a whisker of equalising for a second time when a drive from Doug Loft flashed into the side netting.

Latics had to make an enforced change in the 68th minute when Connor Brown limped off to be replaced by Cliff Byrne.

Cristian Montano had a great chance to seal victory but lacked confidence to shoot first time with his right foot. He cut back to his left but saw his weak shot easily saved by keeper Chris Neal.

Latics scored their third goal in the 76th minute when Dayton cut in from the right and curled a shot into the far top corner of the net.

Jose Baxter made his entrance from the bench with 10 minutes left as he came on for Clarke-Harris.

And in stoppage time Baxter almost added a fourth goal for Latics when his 25-yard drive was brilliantly saved by keeper Chris Neal.

Full-time: Latics 3, Port Vale 1.
