Brave Latics bow out of cup

Brave Latics bowed out of the Capital One Cup following a battling display against Championship club Derby County.

A first-half goal from Rams' striker Michael Jacobs was all that separated the two teams following an evenly-contested cup tie as Derby ended a run of four consecutive first-round defeats in the competition.

Latics could have quickly got on to level terms after the restart when Jonson Clarke-Harris forced a decent save from keeper Lee Grant.

Ben Davies had two chances in quick succession to increase Derby's lead, but both efforts were wide of the target.

Latics were forced into their first substitution in the 56th minute when Clarke-Harris limped off to be replaced by James Wesolowski which enabled Jose Baxter (pictured) to push forward from midfield into the attack.

And that was followed by their final two changes changes midway through the half as James Dayton and Adam Rooney were withdrawn as Sidney Schmeltz and Kirk Millar made their bows.

Latics had a couple of escapes when David Mellor allowed the ball to bounce over his head, but made a great recovery tackle to deny Conor Sammon who was clean through on goal. There were also claims for a penalty when Ben Davies burst clear and somersaulted through the air as keeper Mark Oxley dived at his feet.

Latics came within inches of equalising in the 74th minute when Baxter released Montano who burst clear and lobbed Grant only for left-back Craig Forsyth to make a spectacular goalline clearance with Latics claiming the ball had crossed the line.

And in the closing minutes, Latics even pushed central-defender James Tarkowski into attack in a last-gasp bid to try and find an equaliser.

Full-time: Latics 0, Derby County1.
