Walsall woe for Latics

Latics suffered a disappointing and frustrating afternoon as they lost 1-0 at home to Walsall in their first home game of the season in Sky Bet League 1.

A first-half goal from James Baxendale maintained the Saddlers' 100-per-cent start to their league campaign.

Latics, 1-0 down at the break, made a second substitution at the restart as Sidney Schmeltz came on for Cristian Montano.

Schmeltz missed a great chance to equaliser early in the second half, but the winger blazed over from a James Dayton cross.

Jose Baxter blazed over as it was proving a frustrating afternoon for Latics.

Centre-back James Tarkowski (pictured) was proving to be Latics' most potent attacking threat.

In the same move, Tarkowski had a goalbound shot blocked by Adam Chambers and follow-up header well saved by Richard O'Donnell.

Latics made their final change with 14 minutes left when Anton Rodgers came on for Dayton.

And he immediately made a mark forcing a diving save from O'Donnell with a drive from 25 yards.

O'Donnell then had to palm out a cross-cum-shot from Korey Smith as Latics began to exert control.

However, they were unable to make possession count as Walsall held on for victory.

Full-time: Latics 0, Walsall 1.
