Latics lose to Posh

Latics failed to dent Peterborough's 100-per-cent record in Sky Bet League 1 following a 2-1 defeat at London Road.

Goals from Britt Assombalonga and a penalty by Lee Tomlin made it three league victories out of three for Posh.

Latics' consolation was a goal from substitute Charlie MacDonald, his first for the club, deep into injury time when they also almost snatched an equaliser from debut-making Joseph Mills in a dramatic finish to the match.

Latics, 1-0 down at the break, had a great chance to equalise soon after the restart but James Dayton shot narrowly over after a great lay off from Adam Rooney.

Assombalonga could have doubled Posh's lead only to fire straight at keeper Mark Oxley (pictured) when well placed.

Dayton shot just wide as Latics hunted for an equaliser while at the opposite end a free kick from Grant McCann curled not far off target.

Jose Baxter shot over following a cut back by Dayton, his last contribution before being substituted in the 67th minute as he was replaced by Kirk Millar.

That was soon followed by a second change as Cristian Montano, who had received treatment several times during the match, came off as Sidney Schmeltz was unleashed on Posh.

Posh had three great chances in quick succession to double their advantage.

Millar was dispossessed by Tomlin who broke forward before shooting inches wide with Oxley beaten.

Oxley then made a great save to turn over a header from Tyrone Barnett while Tommy Rowe headed into the side netting from a long throw.

Posh's pressure eventually paid off as they won a penalty in the 82nd minute when Oxley brought down Assombalonga as he burst into the box.

Tomlin stepped forward to score from the spot with an emphatic finish.

Latics brought on MacDonald for Adam Rooney, their third and final change.

If Posh thought they were home and dry they were mistaken as Latics found the net in the second of four minutes of added time.

Connor Brown fired over a cross from the right and MacDonald stole in at the far post to head home.

Then in the fifth added minute, Latics almost equalised when Mills's header from Dayton's corner flashed inches wide of the upright as they almost snatched a point at the death.

Full-time: Peterborough 2, Latics 1.
